russian food
Why is my Russian Blue cat refused to eat? I tried several kinds of food, but always negative.?

I'm taking care of two soldiers Russian peacekeepers. I tried two hard n soft foods, and also tried boiled fish, but eat a little, and then ask again for other foods. Everyone knows what is wrong with them?

You know what they ate before they have? It seems that either are used to certain foods (which obviously does not know what it is) or have accustomed to eating many kinds of food. Like its previous owners bought a kind of new each time they needed more food. Usually eat when hungry although they seem not want to give them, they learn that I have is all we have. I had my cat the wrong way for different foods, and I tried over and snubbed at first, but now eats well. I want to buy dry food. If you want to make healthy and can afford to Chicken Soup for animal lovers of food cats soul. He is the healthiest food I've ever seen, no corn in it. My cat is 16 years old has benefited from this, the vet said was very healthy for her age and maintain it. I choose a food and what you can do is lower, cats do not starve, eat when hungry enough. just make sure you stick with little food you choose. Over time they get used to the food you choose, and should be fine. Hope this helps! $8.59

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Agriculture in Uruguay has in the past constituted a hugely significant factor in the economic life of the country and continues to play a sizeable contemporary role.History Agriculture played such an important part in Uruguayan history and national identity until the middle of the 20th century that the entire country was then sometimes likened to a single huge estancia (agricultural estate) with Montevideo, where the wealth generated in the hinterland was spent, as its casco or administrative head. As another saying went, “Uruguay es la vaca y el puerto ” (“Uruguay is the cow and the port”). When world market prices for Uruguays main export commodities like beef and wool fell drastically in the 1950s, the country’s prosperous golden era came to an end.The Russian settlers who founded San Javier in 1913 introduced the sunflower as well as some advanced agricultural techniques to Uruguay . They constructed a flour mill and the first sunflower oil producing plant in Uruguay .Contemporary agricultural contribution to Uruguayan economy Today, agriculture still contributes roughly 10 % to the countrys GDP and is the main foreign exchange earner, putting Uruguay in line with other agricultural exporters like Brazil, Canada and New Zealand. Uruguay is a member of the Cairns Group of exporters of agricultural products. Uruguays agriculture has relatively low inputs of labour, technology and capital in comparison with other such countries, which results in comparatively lower yields per hectare but also opens the door for Uruguay to market its products as “natural” or “ecological.”Campaigns like “Uruguayan grass-fed beef” and “Uruguay Natural” aim to establish Uruguay as a premium brand in beef, wine and other food products.Estancia tourism A heartland of historic estancias Estancia

Buck Narrates saying, “How do you describe both a beginning and an end, we should have known better, but we didn’t… (At this time the title “Left Behind” appears on screen”)… what does it matter what we think we know, in the end there’s no denying the truth.” A young television journalist for a news network called GNN, Buck Williams, reports from Israel about a new technology with which food will grow almost anywhere, he is interviewing Israeli scientist Chaim Rosenzweig. Arctic Scientist, Gulag Survivor: The Biography of Mikhail Mikhailovich Ermolaev, 19055

Arctic Scientist, Gulag Survivor: The Biography of Mikhail Mikhailovich Ermolaev, 19055

$49.16

One of the most prominent Soviet Arctic scientists of the 1920s and 1930s, Mikhail Mikhailovich Ermolaev was a geologist, physicist, and oceanographer. After working in the Arctic for some thirteen years, he was arrested by the NKVD, convicted on a trumped-up charge of “sabotage,” and sent to the Gulag for ten years. After barely surviving a year of correctional hard labour in a lumber camp, Ermolaev was appointed to a sharashka, or professional team, which was charged with extending the railroad to the coal mines of Vorkuta in the farthest reaches of northeast Russia. Still later, he and his family were exiled to Syktyvkar and Arkhangel’sk. Remarkably, Ermolaev was eventually able to resume his academic career, ultimately establishing a new Department of the Geography of the Oceans at Kaliningrad State University.     Translated from the original Russian and edited by William Barr, this biography is a fascinating personal account typical of the experiences of so many Soviet citizens who were unjustly banished to the infamous Gulag. Because Ermolaev was part of a specialist team, the conditions he and his family endured were better than most, with reasonably comfortable quarters and relatively adequate food. However, his story still clearly illustrates the brutality and inhumanity of the system.     Ermolaev’s son, Aleksei, was one of the authors of the original Russian-language biography published in 2005. His own recollections of his father’s arrest and of the family’s experiences while his father was in the Gulag, along with an excellent selection of family photographs, infuse Arctic Scientist, Gulag Survivor with a sense of immediacy and personal connection. Thanks to the expertise of William Barr, Ermolaev’s story is now available in English for the first time.

At the same time, Saffron describes the complex industry caviar has spawned, illustrating the unfortunate consequences of mass marketing such a rare commodity. The story of caviar has long been one of conflict, crisis, extravagant claims, and colorful characters, such as the Greek sea captain who first discovered the secret method of transporting the perishable delicacy to Europe, the canny German businessmen who encountered a wealth of untapped sturgeon in American waters, the Russian Communists who created a sophisticated cartel to market caviar to an affluent Western clientele, the dirt-poor poachers who eked out a living from sturgeon in the aftermath of the Soviet collapse and the “caviar Mafia” that has risen in their wake, and the committed scientists who sacrificed their careers to keep caviar on our tables. Filled with lore and intrigue,Caviar is a captivating work of culinary, natural, and cultural history. Author Biography: Covering foreign affairs and domestic culture, Inga Saffron has been a reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer for fifteen years and served as the newspaper’s Moscow

He was a leader among Chinese house churches , and known for his resistance against participation in the state-controlled “Three-Self Patriotic churches “.Yuans ministry began after the Japanese surrender in 1945. He was assisted by a Norwegian missionary. Yuan opened a prayer room in Beijing so that he could preach. When the government set up the Three Self Patriotic Movement to develop national churches under party control in 1950, a year after the Communist takeover, Yuan and other pastors refused to join. In 1958 he was arrested and sentenced to life in prison for “counter-revolutionary crimes”.Voice of the Martyrs quoted him speaking about his imprisonment: “During those years in prison my wife suffered untold hardships in bringing up the children. I was sent to near the Russian border doing farm work, growing rice. Wang Ming-Dao and I thought we would die martyrs there. . . ."In the labor camp it was very cold,” he wrote, “food was bad, and the work was hard, but in 22 years I never once got sick. I was thin and wore glasses, but I came back alive; many did not. I also had no Bible for the 22 years and there were no other Protestant Christians there. I met only four Catholic priests. They were in the same situation I was in; they refused to join the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association.”Yuan was released in 1979 and went back into Christian ministry.References (URLs online) Notes See also (online edition) Websites (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Keuh Agong or Kew Ah Gung , Kew A-Gang ,

Seeds of a new corn plant are stolen from Oxford University’s botany lab, and the professor, Alastair Scott, and his Russian assistant, Tanya Petrovskaya, are missing. Alarms ring in London and Washington, where intelligence officials know that Scott was working on a supergene that could allow control over the world’s entire food supply. The British government calls in Arthur Hemmings from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. To his coworkers, Hemmings is just another researcher in the herbarium, but for many years he has been a secret service agent, an outwardly rumpled but dashing covert adventurer. Officials see a Moscow plot. Has Scott been kidnapped? Is he dead? Have Scott and Tanya fled to Russia? And why is Oxford’s vice-chancellor withholding vital information? The intrepid Hemmings follows a series of clues into the cutthroat world of international patents, where the hunt for priceless genes is always nasty and often deadly. In Arthur Hemmings, Pringle has created an original heartbreaker of a hero, a botanist detective with a dash of James Bond. Facing murderous threats, Hemmings investigates fearlessly and with devastating precision. Handsome, witty, an ambitious cook, and a wine lover, he is irresistible to a much younger American female researcher. Day of the Dandelion is a seductive modern hybrid of the thrillers of Graham Greene and the adventure novels of Ian Fleming, filled with political, scientific, and commercial intrigue, and laced with miracle plants, deadly toxins, kidnappings, and car chases. It will keep the reader in suspense and amused from prelude to postscript.

Chapters: Moldovan Leu, Agriculture in Moldova, National Bank of Moldova, Moldova Agroindbank, List of Banks in Moldova, Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Moldova. Excerpt: Moldova is the second smallest of the former Soviet republics and the most densely populated. Industry accounts for only 20% of its labor force, while agriculture’s share is more than one-third. It remains the poorest country in Europe. It is landlocked, bounded by Ukraine on the east and Romania to the west. Moldova’s proximity to the Black Sea gives it a mild and sunny climate. The fertile soil supports wheat, corn, barley, tobacco, sugar beet, and soybeans. Beef and dairy cattle are raised, and beekeeping is widespread. Moldova’s best-known product comes from its extensive and well-developed vineyards concentrated in the central and southern regions. In addition to world-class wine, Moldova produces liqueurs and sparkling wine. It is also known for its sunflower seeds, walnuts, apples, and other fruits. This makes the area ideal for agriculture and food processing, which accounts for about 40% of the country’s GDP. Moldova has experienced economic difficulties, like many other former Soviet republics. Since its economy was highly dependent on the rest of the former Soviet Union for energy and raw materials, the breakdown in trade following the breakup of the Soviet Union had a serious effect, exacerbated at times by drought and civil conflict. The Russian ruble devaluation of 1998 had a deleterious effect on Moldova’s economy, but economic growth has been steady since 2000. Moldova has made progress in economic reform since independence. The government has liberalized most prices and has phased out subsidies on most basic consumer goods. A program begun in March 1993 has … More:

Excerpt: Armenians in Uzbekistan refers to ethnic Armenians living in Uzbekistan . They number around 70,000. The Armenians live mainly in Tashkent . During the Armenian Genocide many Armenians fled through Azerbaijan to Uzbekistan for safety in the Russian empire . Another reason that many Armenians moved to Uzbekistan is that many were from Turkey and it was easier for them to live in Uzbekistan than, say, Armenia or Russia because the Uzbek language is very similar to the Turkish language . The lifestyle they lived in Uzbekistan was also very similar, with similar traditions. Many ended up in Samarkand , Tashkent , Andijan , Fergana , and many other cities in Uzbekistan. After the October Revolution in Uzbekistan it became part of the Soviet Union and many Armenians stayed in Uzbekistan. Estimates say that there were, at the peak, more than 500,000 Armenians in Uzbekistan. After the collapse of the Soviet Union many Armenians moved to Russia , Armenia , the United States and other countries of the world. There are still many Armenians living in Uzbekistan. Their main language is Russian , but some still speak Armenian at home. The Armenians keep their traditions alive by their music, language, and food. There are many Armenian cafes and restaurants in Tashkent and Samarkand. There are even two Armenian Churches in Uzbekistan, one in Samarkand and the other in Tashkent.References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Uzbekistan :41,000Kazakhstan :24,000 (1999) Tajikistan

Excerpt: Soviet military dog training school, 1931 Military parade on Red square, Moscow, May 1, 1938 Anti-tank dogs (Russian : – or ; German : Panzerabwehrhunde or Hundeminen , “dog-mines”) were dogs taught to carry explosives to tanks , armored vehicles and other military targets. They were actively trained by the Soviet and Russian military forces in 1930 1996 and used in 1941 1942 against German tanks in World War II . Although the original dog training routine was to leave the bomb and retreat so that the bomb would be detonated by the timer, this routine failed and was replaced by the impact detonation procedure which killed the dog in the process. The U.S. military trained anti-tank dogs in 1943 for use against fortifications, but never deployed them. Dogs strapped with explosives were unsuccessfully used by Iraqi insurgents in 2005. History In 1924, the Revolutionary Military Council of the Soviet Union approved use of dogs for military purposes, which included a wide range of tasks such as rescue, delivery of first aid, communication, tracking mines and people, assisting in combat, transporting food, medicine and injured soldiers on sledges, detonation of enemy targets, etc. For these purposes, a specialized dog training school was founded in Moscow Oblast . Twelve regional schools were opened soon after, three of which trained anti-tank dogs. The Soviet Army had no dedicated dog trainers and therefore recruited hunters and circus and police dog trainers. Several leading animal scientists were involved as well, to help organizing a wide-scale training program. German shepherds were favored for the program, because of

He’s on the road again. This time, Alton Brown and his motorcycle-mounted crew are off on a thousand-mile, south-to-north journey that follows America’s first “superhighway”—the Mississippi. Starting at the great river’s delta on the Gulf of Mexico and ending up near its headwaters in Minnesota, Alton and buddies travel the heartland’s byways to scout out the very best of roadside food—and to get to know the people who spend their lives preparing and serving it.A companion to the six-part Food Network series airing in fall 2007, Feasting on Asphalt: The River Run is a travel diary, photo journal, and, of course, cookbook. Alton’s itinerary includes big-city eateries and small-town chat ’n’ chews, as well as markets, inns, ice cream parlors, museums, barbecue joints—and even an alligator farm.Louisiana-style Grilled Alligator Tail (served simply, with lemon and butter) is one of the book’s forty original road-food recipes. Others include Pecan-Coconut Pie from an Arkansan roadside restaurant; BBQ Pork Ribs in Mississippi that Brown eats over pancakes; Vegetable Borscht from St. Paul’s Russian Tea House; and Fried Catfish from a riverside burg in Illinois. When it comes to America’s foodways and folkways, there’s no better tour guide than Alton Brown.

He calls this a miracle. Suddenly, Russian jets fly over, attempting to attack Israel. The sun disappears even though it is still in the mid-day. Excerpt: Elias Lönnrot ( (help·info)) (9 April 1802 19 March 1884) was a Finnish philologist and collector of traditional Finnish oral poetry. He is best known for composing the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic compiled from national folklore. Elias Lönnrot’s birth homeLönnrot was born in Sammatti, in the province of Uusimaa in Finland. He studied medicine at the Academy of Turku. To his misfortune the year he joined was the year of the Great Fire of Turku, burning down half the town and the University. Lönnrot (and many of the rest of the University) moved to Helsinki, where he graduated in 1832. He got a job as district doctor of Kajaani in Northern Finland during a time of famine in the district. The famine had prompted the previous doctor to resign, making it possible for a very young doctor to get such a position. Several consecutive years of crop failure resulted in enormous losses of population and livestock; Lönnrot wrote letters to the State departments, asking for food, not medicines. He was the sole doctor for the 4,000 or so people of his district, at a time where doctors were rare and very expensive, and where people did not buy medicines from equally rare and expensive pharmacies, but rather trusted to their village healers and locally available remedies. Elias Lönnrot with his familyHis true passion lay in his native Finnish language. He began writing about the early Finnish language in 1827 and began collecting folk tales from the rural people about that time. Lönnrot went on extended leaves of absence from his doctor’s office; he toured the countryside of Finland, Sapmi (Lapland), and nearby portions of Russian Karelia to support his collecting efforts. This led to a series of books: Kantele, 18291831

Four Against the Arctic: Shipwrecked for Six Years at the Top of the World

$1.99

While reading Valerian Albanov’s In the Land of White Death, David Roberts came across the mention of an old legend of four shipwrecked Russian sailors who had managed to survive six years stranded on a barren island in the high Arctic. Incredulous, Roberts — an expert on exploration literature who had never heard of this account — was determined to learn the truth behind this extraordinary story. Little did he know that his search would ultimately bring him closer to the experiences of these four survivors than he had imagined. In 1743 four survivors of a Russian shipwreck in the Arctic Ocean were trapped on a tiny island with only twenty pounds of flour for food. With ingenuity and courage they endured six years of nearly unimaginable hardship, with only driftwood to fuel their life-saving fires, and the constant threat of attack from polar bears (they would kill ten with homemade lances). Roberts’s quest to document their story would take him across two continents and culminate in his own expedition to the remote and desolate shores where these mysterious sailors had been marooned. Riveting and haunting, Four Against the Arctic chronicles an incredible true story.

$12.95

"I’m not hanging noodles on your ears." In Moscow, this curious, engagingly colorful assertion is common parlance, but unless you’re Russian your reaction is probably "Say what?" The same idea in English is equally odd: "I’m not pulling your leg." Both mean: Believe me.As author Jag Bhalla demonstrates, these amusing, often hilarious phrases provide a unique perspective on how different cultures perceive and describe the world. Organized by theme—food, love, romance, and many more—they embody cultural traditions and attitudes, capture linguistic nuance, and shed fascinating light on "the whole ball of wax." For example, when English-speakers are hard at work, we’re "nose to the grindstone," but industrious Chinese toil "with liver and brains spilled on the ground" and busy Indians have "no time to die."If you’re already fluent in 10 languages, you probably won’t need this book, but you’ll "get a kick out of it" anyhow; for the rest of us, it’s a must. Either way, this surprising, often thought-provoking little tome is gift-friendly in appearance, a perfect impulse buy for word lovers, travelers, and anyone else who enjoys looking at life in a riotous, unusual way. And we’re not hanging noodles from your ear.

 Jewish Baltimore: A Family Album

Jewish Baltimore: A Family Album

$5.26

From East Baltimore to Forest Park to Park Heights, from Nates and Leon’s deli to Hutzler’s department store, Jewish Baltimore tells stories of neighborhoods, people, and landmarks that have been important to Baltimore’s Jewish experience. Gilbert Sandler, whose popular columns have appeared in Baltimore’s Jewish Times and the Baltimore Sun, offers a wide-ranging history of the region’s Jewish community from the 1850s to the present, covering both German Jewish and Russian Jewish communities. Sandler’s archival research uncovers new details about important people and events, but the heart of his book lies in its anecdotes and quotations—the reminiscences of those who recall the rich tapestry of days gone by. More than a hundred nostalgic photographs help to bring the memories to life. Many of Sandler’s essays invoke famous names in Baltimore history—names like Jack Pollack, the ex-boxer turned politician; Joseph Meyerhoff, who gave his city a symphony hall; Samuel Hecht, founder of the last surviving local department store chain. But just as often, these essays remind us of unsung heros: rabbis, merchants, teachers, and camp counselors. Sandler tells many inspirational stories, including how one young woman, escaping from Germany in 1939 on a ship headed to Bolivia, seized an opportunity when she learned the ship would stop in Baltimore. She sent a cable to her boyfriend in Richmond, Virginia, telling him to meet her at the dock, and the two were married onboard—which eventually allowed her to enter the United States. Sandler always uncovers the “human interest” in his stories. His account of the S.S. President Warfield—refitted as the Exodus to carry food, supplies, and 4,500 European refugees to Palestine in 1947—contains personal recollections from one of the local businessmen who played a key role in the secret operation, and even a statement from someone who, as a young workman, helped

 Karyotypes of Parasitic Hymenoptera

Karyotypes of Parasitic Hymenoptera

$99.32

This summary of the results of chromosomal analysis of various groups of parasitic wasps will be essential reading for those working in the field. It is the second edition of a monograph that was first published in Russian, and has been substantially updated with new data, conclusions and references. The goal of this ground-breaking work is to document the author’s study of the karyotype structure and chromosomal evolution of parasitic Hymenoptera. It also interprets the results obtained, from both routine and differential chromosome staining, for systematic and phylogenetic purposes.Despite the huge importance of parasitic wasps, many problems of their taxonomy remain insufficiently studied. This is a situation that needs rectifying, as Hymenoptera are one of the largest and most taxonomically complicated groups of insects and they play a very important role in food chains as parasitoids of the overwhelming majority of insects and other arthropods. Parasitic wasps attack many pests of agriculture and forestry as well as certain beneficial insects. In addition, some secondarily phytophagous Hymenoptera damage certain cultivated plants. The renowned entomologist and author of this volume, Vladimir Gokhman, has himself developed a particular technique for obtaining chromosomal preparations from adult parasitic wasps. This allowed the inclusion of a wide range of those insects into the study. The karyotypic features of the majority of superfamilies and families as well as many lower taxa of parasitic Hymenoptera are listed, while the plesiomorphic and apomorphic character states of chromosome sets of parasitic wasps are revealed. The structural features of karyotypes used for identifying and discriminating sibling species and similar forms are shown, as are the data on chromosome sets of about 400 species of parasitic Hymenoptera (including more than 200 micrographs). Also included is a comprehensive phylogenetic and taxonomic analysis of

Macro Trading and Investment Strategies: Macroeconomic Arbitrage in Global Markets

Macro Trading and Investment Strategies: Macroeconomic Arbitrage in Global Markets

$40.95

Some of the most successful and well-known hedge funds have long profited from a trading strategy that applies macroeconomic views to global markets: global macro. Pioneered by hedge fund managers such as George Soros and Julian Robertson, this strategy has led to enormous profits. By placing directional bets on liquid assets, it is particularly suited for trending markets. In Macro Trading and Investment Strategies: Macroeconomic Arbitrage in Global Markets, Gabriel Burstein defines and rigorously analyzes this investment style. He then proposes macro arbitrage as an original alternative to trading subjective macroeconomic views at times when markets are either trending or are extremely volatile, lacking direction, and in crisis, such as during the Asian, Russian, and Latin American economic and financial collapses of the late 1990s. Macro arbitrage is introduced as a new, lower-risk, long/short macro strategy that is based on detecting objective macroeconomic mispricings in global markets. Burstein shows how this trading strategy works in stock market sector spreads (food retailers/general retailers, banks/utilities), stock index spreads (Italy/Spain, Sweden/Finland), and with the European Monetary Union (EMU) ahead of its 1999 single-currency final stage. In Macro Trading and Investment Strategies, Burstein presents, with examples, the framework for traditional global macro strategies, then shows how to use macroeconomic mispricings in global financial markets to design innovative global macroeconomic arbitrage strategies for trading and investing. Packed with revealing trading case studies, examples, explanations, and definitions, this comprehensive work covers:* Global directional macro, long/short macro, and macroeconomic arbitrage trading and investment strategies* Causes of macroeconomic mispricings in markets; tackling secondary macroeconomic variables in trades* The importance of technical timing in macro arbitrage*

Making War, Forging Revolution: Russia's Continuum of Crisis, 1914-1921

Making War, Forging Revolution: Russia’s Continuum of Crisis, 1914-1921

$68.5

Offering a fundamental reinterpretation of the emergence of the Soviet state, Peter Holquist situates the Bolshevik Revolution within the continuum of mobilization and violence that began with World War I and extended through Russia’s civil war. In so doing, Holquist provides a new genealogy for Bolshevik political practices, one that places them clearly among Russian and European wartime measures. From this perspective, the Russian Revolution was no radical rupture with the past, but rather the fulcrum point in a continent-wide era of crisis and violence that began in 1914. While Tsarist and Revolutionary governments implemented policies for total mobilization common to other warring powers, they did so in a supercharged and concentrated form. Holquist highlights how the distinctive contours of Russian political life set its experience in these years apart from other wartime societies. In pursuit of revolution, statesmen carried over crisis-created measures into political life and then incorporated them into the postwar political structure. Focusing on three particular policies—state management of food; the employment of official violence for political ends; and state surveillance—Holquist demonstrates the interplay of state policy and local implementation, and its impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. Making War, Forging Revolution casts a new light on Russia’s revolution and boldly inserts it into the larger story of the Great War and twentieth-century European history.
