Cuisine a Latina: Fresh Tastes and a World of Flavors from Michy’s Miami Kitchen

$30

At Michy’s, acclaimed as Miami’s best restaurant, Michelle Bernstein is building a national following for her fresh new take on Latin cuisine. Born and raised by a food-loving Argentinean mother in Miami, Michelle grew up fluent in Spanish and steeped in the city’s cosmopolitan, Latin-influenced culture. She explored South America, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Using the freshest ingredients and the French training she went on to acquire, she has blended all these traditions into a cuisine that is uniquely hers.Cuisine à Latina introduces us to Michelle’s world. Her Latin food is unlike any that you’ve probably tasted. Full of flavor, it is familiar but exciting—vividly seasoned but not fiery hot, with touches that reflect the casual vivacity of Miami. You’ll find many appetizers to light up a gathering: Fried Calamari with Chile-Coconut Sauce, irresistibly flaky Ground Beef and Tomato Empanadas, and bright Peruvian Mixed Seafood Ceviche. Or start off with Michelle’s cool riff on a Spanish classic, White Gazpacho with Almonds, Grapes, and Cucumber.Michelle gives you plenty of great party dishes with Latin flair, like Beef Tenderloin with Creamy Horseradish, or the colorful Fideua, bursting with seafood and herbs, which is similar to paella but much easier, and made with spaghetti instead of rice. You’ll also want to try her sensationally simple grilled steak with chimichurri sauce, the Argentinean version of salsa. Her Cornish game hens, marinated in garlic-lime mojo, with chorizo sausage-bread stuffing, are perfect for Thanksgiving—or a summer evening—and she shows you how to make the same recipe with turkey.Michelle’s uncomplicated “Mama cooking” will spice up your everyday repertoire: Mom’s Arroz con Pollo (chicken with yellow rice), Tuna Schnitzel with Cucumber Slaw, Pork with Prunes and Apricots. Her side dishes and salads beg to be at the center of the

 Dr. Cyclops: The Movie Classic

Dr. Cyclops: The Movie Classic

$4.99

Classic Novelization of Famous SF/Horror Movie. Here is the weird and terrifying adventure of a group of people shrunk to the size of dolls by a scientific megalomaniac. Alexander Thorkel, a nearsighted biologist, is pursuing a fantastic experiment deep in the heart of the Peruvian jungle. Using a new radioactive element, he has discovered a method for shrinking living matter. Dr. Thorkel aims to end hunger around the world, reasoning that if people were one-tenth their normal size, there would be ten times as much food to go around. But when a party of Thorkel’s fellow scientists penetrates his jungle fastness, the paranoid biologists decides the only way he can protect his secret is to shrink them down to size. When he has reduced the band of scientists to the height of dolls, Thorkel gloats over them, his (to them) gigantic eyes peering down terrifyingly through his glasses. Even then, the scientists defy him, and Thorkel kills one to demonstrate his power. That’s when the scientists realize that if they ever truly believed in “brain over brawn,” this is the time to prove it. Or any one of them could be the fiendish Thorkel’s next victim. Includes filmography of classic 1940s film’s cast, crew, etc.

 Inca Religion and Customs

Inca Religion and Customs

$25

Completed in 1653, Father Bernabe Cobo’s Historia del Nuevo Mundo is an important source of information on pre-conquest and colonial Spanish America. Though parts of the work are now lost, the remaining sections which have been translated offer valuable insights into Inca culture and Peruvian history. Inca Religion and Customs is the second translation by Roland Hamilton from Cobo’s massive work. Beginning where History of the Inca Empire left off, it provides a vast amount of data on the religion and lifeways of the Incas and their subject peoples. Despite his obvious Christian bias as a Jesuit priest, Cobo objectively and thoroughly describes many of the religious practices of the Incas. He catalogs their origin myths, beliefs about the afterlife, shrines and objects of worship, sacrifices, sins, festivals, and the roles of priests, sorcerers, and doctors. The section on Inca customs is equally inclusive. Cobo covers such topics as language, food and shelter, marriage and childrearing, agriculture, warfare, medicine, practical crafts, games, and burial rituals. Because the Incas apparently had no written language, such postconquest documents are an important source of information about Inca life and culture. Cobo’s work, written by one who wanted to preserve something of the indigenous culture that his fellow Spaniards were fast destroying, is one of the most accurate and highly respected.

Excerpt: Amantaní in the distance as seen from Taquile . Amantaní is an island on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca . According to a 1988 census , it has a population of 3,663 Quechua speakers divided among about 800 families. The island is circular and about 9.28 km² in size. It has two mountain peaks, Pachatata (Father Earth) and Pachamama (Mother Earth), with ancient Inca and Tiwanaku ruins on top of both. The hillsides, are terraced mostly worked by hand and planted with wheat , quinoa , potatoes , and other vegetables. Livestock , including alpacas , also graze the slopes. The temples at the top of the peaks are generally closed during the year. Entrance is permitted on January 20, the annual feast day, at which time the island’s population divides in two, with each group gathering at its respective temple. A race is then held from each peak to a point somewhere between the two, and a representative of each group is chosen to run. According to tradition, a victory for Pachamama portends a bountiful harvest in the year to come. Similar to the Taquileños, the inhabitants of Amantaní are also known for their textiles , as well as their ceramics . Most of the inhabitants live in houses of adobe . There is a small health clinic and school on Amantaní, and, while there are no hotels, some families offer meals and overnight lodging to tourists . In return, guests are expected to bring food (such as rice or sugar) as a gift. The island has no cars and is powered for only a few hours a day by a generator.

 Touching the Void (WSE)

Touching the Void (WSE)

$8.32

In 1985, two adventurous young mountaineers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, set off to climb the treacherous west face of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. They were experienced climbers, and climbed “Alpine-style,” climbing the mountain in “one great push,” without setting up ropes or base camps ahead of time. After dealing with a snowstorm and some dangerous climbing over powder formations, they reached the summit (about 21,000 feet) on the third day. The climb down proved to be far more difficult. Simpson fell and broke his leg badly. Yates decided to try to lower Simpson down the mountain, one 300-foot section of rope at a time. The climbers had run out of gas to melt snow, so they couldn’t risk stopping as night came, and a violent snowstorm began. Their plodding, painful journey hit a snag when Yates inadvertently lowered Simpson over the edge of a cliff. In the storm, the men couldn’t hear each other’s cries, and, Yates, uncertain as to Simpson’s position, and gradually sliding down the slope himself, decided to cut the rope that connected them, sending Simpson plummeting to certain death. Miraculously, Simpson survived the fall, and was faced with the prospect of getting off the mountain alone with no food, no water, and a broken leg. In Touching the Void, filmmaker Kevin Macdonald (One Day in September) tells their story, based on Simpson’s book, using contemporary interviews with the two men, and a reenactment of their climb and descent, featuring Brendan Mackey as Simpson and Nicholas Aaron as Yates. Touching the Void was shown at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi. cc “Making of Touching the Void” featurette, “Return to Siula Grande” featurette, “What Happened Next” interview with Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, Original theatrical trailer. cc “Making of Touching the Void” featurette “Return to Siula Grande” featurette “What Happened Next” interview with Joe Simpson and Simon Yates Original theatrical trailer.
