Benefits of making your own baby food vs. store baught food?
My daughter is almost 5 months old, so she’s getting close to being ready for baby food. I really like the idea of making baby food for her, but I’m still undecided. For those of you who do make baby food, is it more cost effective? Is it healthier? Tell me the benefits of making it vs. store baught. Is it a hassle, or do you fall into a routine with it? Can I use a blender or do you need a certain kind of food processor?
Thanks in advance for all of the answers!
I make my own baby food and wouldn’t have it any other way!! I didn’t get sucked into the hype of a baby food maker. For me, a steamer basket, food processor and food mill are all that I need. I purchased a couple of supplies (a book called “The Baby & Toddler Cookbook” from Williams Sonoma and a few food storage trays).
I find it EXTREMELY cost effective. For instance, a large bag of peas will give you about 20 servings of food for about $1.50, whereas you could only buy 2-3 jars for that much. 2 large sweet potatoes will generate 10-12 servings for $2, whereas you could only buy 3-4 jars for that much… and so forth.
Jarr-ed baby food is always made from canned fruits and veggies, which taste terrible and lack the nutrients of fresh or frozen goods.
The only food that I buy pre-made is unsweetened applesauce (because I eat it myself). Other than that, I serve her foods that I have made and frozen, or I’ll mash up an avocado or a banana on the spot! It’s better for the baby and very rewarding for you.

Food Manufacturers of France: Groupe Danone, Menier Chocolate, Debauve $9.8 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Groupe Danone, known as Dannon in the United States, is a French food-products multinational corporation based in Paris. It claims world leadership in fresh dairy products, marketed under the corporate name, and also in bottled water. In 2007 it swapped its world number 2 position as producer of cereals and biscuits for the same position in baby foods, having sold the biscuits division to Kraft Foods and acquired Numico. Besides the Danone/Dannon brand of yoghurts, the company owns several internationally known brands of bottled water: Volvic, Evian, and Badoit. About 56% of its 2006 net sales derived from dairy, 28% from beverages, and 16% from biscuits and cereals. Danone owns many water brands worldwide. In Asia, it has acquired Yili, Aqua (Indonesia) and Robust (92%) and has a 51% holding in China’s Wahaha Joint Venture Company, giving it a total market share of 20% and making it the leading vendor of packaged water in Asia. The original company bearing the corporate name was founded in 1919 by Isaac Carasso in Barcelona (Spain) as a small factory producing yoghurt. The factory was named Danone, a Catalan diminutive of the name of his first son, Daniel Carasso. Ten years later, the first French factory was built, but, during World War II, Daniel Carasso moved the company to New York, since, because Carasso was Jewish and France was occupied by the Germans and controlled by French collaborationists, his life was under threat, where Dannon (note the spelling) Milk Products Inc. was founded. In the United States, Daniel partnered with the Swiss-born Spaniard Joe Metzger and changed the brand name to Dannon to sound more American. In 1951, Daniel Carasso returned to Paris to manage the family’s businesses in France and Spain, and the American… More: |

The Kennedy Detail: JFK’s Secret Service Agents Break Their Silence $29.99 THE SECRET SERVICE. An elite team of men who share a single mission: to protect the president of the United States. On November 22, 1963, these men failed—and a country would never be the same. Now, for the first time, a member of JFK’s Secret Service detail reveals the inside story of the assassination, the weeks and days that led to it and its heartrending aftermath. This extraordinary book is a moving, intimate portrait of dedication, courage, and loss.Drawing on the memories of his fellow agents, Jerry Blaine captures the energetic, crowd-loving young president, who banned agents from his car and often plunged into raucous crowds with little warning. He describes the careful planning that went into JFK’s Texas swing, the worries and concerns that agents, working long hours with little food or rest, had during the trip. And he describes the intensely private first lady making her first-ever political appearance with her husband, just months after losing a newborn baby. Here are vivid scenes that could come only from inside the Kennedy detail: JFK’s last words to his tearful son when he left Washington for the last time; how a sudden change of weather led to the choice of the open-air convertible limousine that day; Mrs. Kennedy standing blood-soaked outside a Dallas hospital room; the sudden interruption of six-year-old Caroline’s long-anticipated sleepover with a friend at home; the exhausted team of agents immediately reacting to the president’s death with a shift to LBJ and other key governmental figures; the agents’ dismay at Jackie’s decision to walk openly from the White House to St. Matthew’s Cathedral at the state funeral. Most of all, this is a look into the lives of men who devoted their entire beings to protecting the presidential family: the stress of the secrecy they kept, the emotional bonds that developed, the terrible impact on agents’ psyches and families, and |

The Maternity Leave Breastfeeding Plan $16.95 Finally, a sensible plan for women who return to work after a three-month maternity leave Anyone who has ever had a baby has heard the prevailing medical wisdom that “breast is best” for baby’s first food. Solid science stands behind that wisdom: Excellent studies show that there are immunological and other benefits for the breastfed baby. On the other hand, doctors and breastfeed- ing advocates rarely appreciate or even acknowledge the challenges that go along with breastfeeding until baby is ready for solid food — anywhere from four to nine months. The simple and reasonable approach is one that many doctors and breastfeeding advocates unfortunately treat as sacrilege: Limit breastfeeding to the length of your maternity leave. As Dr. Wilkoff explains, the truth is that women who nurse for three months (or until their maternity leave is over) provide their children with an optimal start in terms of nutrition and can have the same rewarding experience as mothers who nurse their children much longer. In contrast to the insistence of militant breastfeeding advocates, he offers an important and comforting message: Breast is best for as long as you can comfortably manage it. There are no guilt trips or political agendas here. Instead mothers will find: a practical plan for establishing a nursing schedule troubleshooting advice, including how moms can avoid becoming the baby’s pacifier help with making a smooth transition back to the workplace and more |

West Virginia Farm Stories $14.95 Cordelia, now 104 years old began writing at the age of 93 when she taught herself to use a computer. Initially the stories were for her family, but soon her stories of life on a rural farm were being published in the Charleston Gazette Metro Edition. She reminds us what self-sufficiency really meant: making all your own soap, jam, baby cradles, and bed sheets. She tells about attending, and then teaching, in one-room schoolhouses. Chapters on gardening, farm animals, and working in the kitchen come alive with funny stories, and remind us about the once inherent necessity of growing and raising your own food. Creative inventions came along that made cooking and housekeeping easier, and some simple things we take for granted—such as screen doors—were first looked at with a dubious eye. Figgatt, who goes by Cordelia, was born in 1904 and began writing this personal and practical memoir in 1997. That’s the year she turned 93 and taught herself to use a computer. She spent the next seven years writing about growing up in rural Putnam County in the early 1900s. Cordelia finished the book in time for her 100th birthday party. Figgatt initially wrote the book for her two children, so they could read about growing up in those very different times in the early part of the last century. She also wrote to pass the time during cold West Virginia winters, when she couldn’t get out much. Soon other family members requested books, and her children had copies printed at an office supply store and spiral bound for them. Over the years, more and more people wanted to read Farm Stories. Demand for the book increased with its exposure, which continued to grow as excerpts were published in various Metro editions of the Charleston Gazette- Mail. As Cordelia reached and passed her 100th and 104th birthdays, she garnered more and more attention. At age 100, she was recognized for being Marshall University’s oldest alumna. At age 104, she |

Women Workers Of The Orient $19.99 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:CHAPTER II. THE WAGE EARNERS The “coolie When poverty is most bitter there is woman” in India. littie or no distinction between man’s work and woman’s. In India, where the average income is ten dollars a year, where millions live on one meagre meal a day, the woman of the family where the income is the smallest and the supply of food the scantest cannot stop to question whether or not the work she can get is adapted to her frail body; or whether or not it takes her away from her home. She must take it or starve. So it is that in India many of the women of the laboring classes leave their homes at sunrise and work until sunset at any work which is possible for them. If you have been in India, you have doubtless been struck with admiration at the smooth firm roads over which automobiles bowl as smoothly as on any western boulevard. But unless you saw one in the process of construction, you may not have known that the earth and concrete used in the making were very probably carried in baskets on the heads of the women of the country. You will find the women of India, too, where buildings are being erected, bearing away the earth from the excavations on their patient heads, carrying the bricks, fetching water and helping to mix the mortar, and once in a long time slippingaway to give hasty attention to the needs of the tiny brown baby who, in his little basket, has been stowed away in some corner or under a bush. In the country districts these women day laborers, or coolie women, as they are usually termed, work for the farmers, helping to plant the rice, and usually doing all the weeding of the crops. They are almost always to be found working in groups, or with some older women, for the sake of protection. The wages the coolie woman receives for hauling brick? all day. |
