Alpha Solution for Permanent Weight Loss: Harness the Power of Your Subconscious Mind to Change Your Relationship with Food–Forever $13.99 What if you could lose weight easily–without diets, calorie counters, or complicated workouts? For the last twenty-five years, Dr. Ronald J. Glassman has helped thousands of his patients lose weight—from five pounds to 150 pounds—and keep it off. And he knows that the answer to overeating is not another diet or exercise regimen. The answer is to harness the power of your mind. The Alpha Solution presents his phenomenally successful scientific approach to easy, permanent weight loss—and proves that you literally can think yourself thin. For many of us, the result of years of poor eating, or eating for psychological and social reasons rather than nutritional ones, means that, subconsciously, we have been conditioned to eat the wrong foods in the wrong quantities. Despite our desire to be lean, strong, and healthy, we’re still subconsciously programmed to overeat, crave certain foods, and snack unnecessarily. This is why diets don’t work: Even if we know we should choose salad over pizza, our subconscious mind—ingrained with years of negative eating habits—undermines our efforts at every turn. The solution? Give your brain a new food blueprint by tapping into its “Alpha” state—the state right before you fall asleep in which your subconscious mind is open to suggestion and change. Through a series of simple questionnaires, Dr. Glassman guides you through the process of identifying the food issues you need to overcome and creating two personalized scripts tailored to your specific weight loss needs. You will then record the scripts on a tape or CD and listen to the recordings each night as you fall asleep. The changes are immediate and dramatic—you will begin reaching for healthy foods, keeping proper portion sizes, and turning down the fattening, sugary foods you used to crave. Within days, your eating habits will be transformed and you will begin melting away the |

Awakening Ashley $9.96 At eighteen months, Ashley Ruben still didn’t talk. She wouldn’t respond when her name was called; she didn’t appear to hear either. She fixated on tiny pieces of dirt and ate only crunchy foods. She was enveloped in a thick fog-impenetrable by everyone except Barney the Dinosaur. She worked puzzles like a kindergartener and was computer-savvy before she was two years old. Her mother’s late-night searches on the Internet hinted at a reason for her lack of engagement with the outside world. And then a developmental specialist confirmed it: autism, a diagnosis that shook the foundation of a family and shattered a mother’s world. Ashley could hear, but she couldn’t listen. In order to address that, a therapy retraining her ears to perceive sound better took her back to the time in the womb- where listening begins. With the help of specialized recordings of Mozart’s music, Ashley gradually awakened. Her brain’s desire to communicate was kindled, fostering a connection with her body, her family, and the world around her. Ashley had recovered, developing the ability to talk, to listen, to communicate- to become an engaging child. But how could Sharon Ruben, a clinical researcher in her own right, convince the skeptics without clinical trial data to prove the effectiveness of this therapy? She didn’t need data. She had Ashley-all the proof she needed. “Listen Up! This remarkable story is for every person with a child waiting to be awakened to language and communication.” -Don Campbell, Author of The Mozart Effect and The Mozart Effect for Children |

Crave: Why You Binge Eat and How to Stop $16 A renowned expert on binge eating, the director of the Eating Disorders Program at the University of North Carolina, shares proven techniques for conquering food cravings.Clinical psychologist Cynthia M. Bulik, specially trained in psychiatric genetics, is a leading authority on eating disorders such as binge eating disorder (BED). For twenty years she and other researchers have tracked thousands of people, and have found that BED runs in families. I n 2000, Bulik was one of a group of researchers who studied eight thousand sets of twins in a Norwegian registry to learn more about how genes contribute to binge eating disorder. T hey found an astonishingly high heritability of 47 percent.Binge eating disorder is less well known than anorexia or bulimia nervosa but is more prevalent. Health professionals estimate that more than five million American women and three million men suffer from BED. Jane Brody revealed in the New York Times that when she was twenty-three years old, her food binges were so extreme that “many mornings I awakened to find partly chewed food still in my mouth.”Genetic predisposition, brain chemistry, psychology, and cultural pressures increase a person’s susceptibility to BED, but bingeing is not inevitable. Crave helps readers understand why they crave specific foods, recognize what triggers their strong urges, and get control over their responses to those triggers. BED is highly treatable; Bulik shares with readers a set of easy-to-implement “curb the crave” techniques that has empowered patients at the U NC Eating Disorders Program and elsewhere to triumph over their binge eating. T hrough the stories of some of these patients—men and women, young and old—and with the guidance of Bulik, readers will develop effective strategies to successfully conquer their cravings and establish healthy eating and activity habits. |

It differs from a pie as it is made by placing the filling on a flat pastry shape, usually a circle, and folding it to wrap the filling, crimping the edge to form a seal. Environmental Influences on Human Brain Evolution $144.95 A multidisciplinary treatment of the importance of aquatic foods in human brain evolutionThe evolution of the human brain and cognitive ability is one of the central themes of physical/biological anthropology. Based on studies of the modern human brain, certain prerequisites were needed for the development of the early brain and associated cognitive advances. Important prerequisites included polyunsaturated fatty acids and other brain selective nutrients, which are found in highest quantity in fish and shellfish. Early hominins were able to access these foods when frequenting wetlands, particularly lake and river margins. Increased consumption of this high-quality diet over time exaptively diverted energy to the brain, and was a catalyst for brain growth. The later exploitation of marine shellfish and fish is roughly correlated with the emergence of Homo sapiens, and cognitive advance associated with changing human behaviors. Human Brain Evolution: The Influence of Freshwater and Marine Food Resources documents the energy and nutrient constraints of the modern brain, highlighting the significant role of brain selective nutrients in brain development and the evolution of neural systems. There is a particular focus on two long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in brain development and maintenance—docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA). These nutrients are found in the highest quantity in fish and shellfish, and this volume further discusses fossil, morphological, and isotopic evidence for hominin consumption of these foods over time. The contributors to this volume come from several fields—paleoanthropology, nutrition, neurochemistry, archaeology, and paleobiology—providing a multidisciplinary approach to the complex and challenging topic of the evolution of the brain. The first half of this volume focuses specifically on the biochemical and nutritional requirements of encephalization of the human brain, best |

Epilepsy and the Ketogenic Diet $31.36 Recent advances in our understanding of the ketogenic diet (KD)-a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, adequate-protein diet used for the treatment of medically intractable epilepsy-have produced a resurgence of interest in, and application of, this valuable treatment for the epileptic patient. In Epilepsy and the Ketogenic Diet, internationally recognized researchers and clinicians from around the world synthesize the current state of the science and clinical practice of the KD. On the basic science side, the authors review what is known about the basic biochemical mechanisms of action of the KD at the molecular level, spelling out in detail its complex interactions with nutrient components, neurodevelopment, brain biochemistry, and physiology. They also examine the effects of the KD on the metabolism of fats, amino acids, and carbohydrates in the central nervous system at both the macro and cellular levels. On the clinical side, physicians, dietitians, and nurses provide a full range of information concerning the treatment of seizures with KD, including a detailed assessment of the indications for, and the contraindications and/or complications that arise from its use, detailed equations that permit the caregiver to calculate the actual amounts of different types of foods that can be included in daily diet plans, and documented information on the carbohydrate and calorie content of hundreds of commonly used drugs. Numerous relevant tables, graphs, and figures, as well as up-to-date references, consistent use of terms across chapters, and a highly annotated index ensure easy access to needed information.Illuminating and highly practical, Epilepsy and the Ketogenic Diet constitutes a unique benchmark synthesis of up-to-date clinical and scientific information that explains the mechanisms behind the KD and how its maximum therapeutic benefits may be realized in the epileptic patient with minimal adverse effects. |

High-Fat Diets: Ketogenic Diet $8.63 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet primarily used to treat difficult-to-control (refractory) epilepsy in children. The diet mimics aspects of starvation by forcing the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Normally, the carbohydrates contained in food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is particularly important in fuelling brain function. However, if there is very little carbohydrate in the diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies pass into the brain and replace glucose as an energy source. An elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood, a state known as ketosis, leads to a reduction in the frequency of epileptic seizures. The diet provides just enough protein for body growth and repair, and sufficient calories to maintain the correct weight for age and height. The classic ketogenic diet contains a 4:1 ratio by weight of fat to combined protein and carbohydrate. This is achieved by excluding high-carbohydrate foods such as starchy fruits and vegetables, bread, pasta, grains and sugar, while increasing the consumption of foods high in fat such as cream and butter. Most dietary fat is made of molecules called long-chain triglycerides (LCTs). However, medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs)made from fatty acids with shorter carbon chains than LCTsare more ketogenic. A variant of the diet known as the MCT ketogenic diet uses a form of coconut oil, which is rich in MCTs, to provide around half the calories. As less overall fat is needed in this variant of the diet, a greater proportion of carbohydrate and protein can be consumed, allowing a greater variety of food choices. Developed in the 1920s, the ketogenic diet was widely u… More: |

Junk Science: An Overdue Indictment of Government, Industry, and Faith Groups That Twist Science for Their Own Gain $0.25 “A passionate, minutely informed, and scrupulously fair analysis of all the abuses and misuses of science that are rampant today—a clarion call to action that concerns us all.”—Oliver Sacks, M.D., author of Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a HatThe American public is suffering from a rampage against reason by special interests in government, commerce, and the faith industry. In Junk Science, Dan Agin offers an overdue indictment of the groups that twist science for their own gain.Provocative, comprehensive, and hard-hitting, Agin argues from the center that we will pay a heavy price for the follies of people who consciously distort the public’s understanding of the real world. With entertaining candidness, he reveals the data faking, reality ignoring, fear mongering, and outright lying that contribute to intentionally manufactured public ignorance. Agin outs the factions twisting scientific data to maintain riches and power in sections including:— “Buyer Beware” (genetically modified foods, aging, and tobacco companies)— “Medical Follies” (chiropractics, health care, talk therapy)— “Poison and Bombs in the Greenhouse” (pollution, warfare, global warming)— “Religion, Embryos, and Cloning”— “Genes, Behavior, and Race”We already pay a heavy price for many groups’ conscious manipulation of the public’s understanding of science, and Junk Science arms us with understanding, cutting through the fabric of lies and setting the record straight.”Agin is one angry empiricist…focused, extremely articulate, skilled in debate, and above all, dedicated only to what can be experienced through the senses and duplicated in the laboratory.”—Chicago Sun-Times“An eye- and brain-opener, fraught with insight and plenty of astute observations and |

Learning Disability Myth: Understanding and Overcoming Your Child’s Diagnosis of Dyspraxia, Tourette’s Syndrome of Childhood, ADD, ADHD or OCD $14.95 At least one child in five experiences some form of learning difficulty, however, learning difficulties as we understand them do not exist—they are not diseases, just symptoms. These symptoms never appear alone and are treatable and avoidable. Here, an expert in child neurology approaches learning difficulties of childhood—including dyslexia, ADD, OCD, ADHD, dyspraxia and Tourette’s syndrome—from a truly groundbreaking perspective. All human babies are born prematurely and develop special, new brain cells four months after birth. Every human’s development in the womb and particularly in these early stages of life can, therefore, be affected by developmental delay, which can blight childhood and marginalize a child at school. Since our brains continue to grow, however, the symptoms can also be treated. This book explains the background to human developmental delay and offers advice on how to get the best assessment for your child and an explanation of what the examination must include; the effects—good and bad—of certain foods on the brain; exercises and computer programs that you can use to expand your child’s neural function; and case histories of children on whom this plan has worked. In the single biggest breakthrough in the history of learning difficulties, this guide explains the cause of developmental delay syndromes using simple, easy-to-follow tips to show how to greatly reduce the risk of a child suffering from them, and gives advice on what can be done to treat those children that do. |

Lipids in Aquatic Ecosystems $99 Lipids in Aquatic Ecosystems provides a comprehensive summary of the most recent literature on the role of lipids in aquatic systems from many world experts. Essential fatty acids (EFAs), or omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids as they are known in the popular press, have garnered considerable attention in the technical and popular literature during the last decade. Lipids are important energy storage molecules in most organisms. However, equally or even more important, specific lipids (e.g. EFAs) play critical roles in a wide range of physiological processes such as regulating the structural properties of cell membranes and serving as precursors to eicosanoid signaling molecules (i.e. prostaglandins, prostacyclins, the thromboxanes and the leukotrienes). It is well established the EFAs have important impacts on human health, and it is widely agreed that the classic “Western diet” is particularly imbalanced vis-à-vis foods containing omega-3 versus omega-6 fatty acids. But beyond the specialist literature, it is not widely known that the most physiologically important long chain, polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, i.e. eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are produced de novo principally by aquatic algae. Furthermore, within aquatic ecosystems these molecules may be synthesized from precursor fatty acid molecules and/or concentrated as they are conveyed to animals consumed by humans. For example, in salmonid fish DHA and EPA constitute ~40% of total fatty acids, whereas in typical marine and freshwater phytoplankton EPA and DHA account for between 2% and 20% of total fatty acids. In humans, EPA and DHA play key roles in heart health, immune and inflammatory responses, visual acuity as well being major components of neurological tissues such as the brain and spinal cord. This realization has prompted great concern in the fisheries management community that the world’s natural supply of EPA and DHA is being overexploited. There is also |

Cluster headache pain may be related specifically to blood vessel dilation or to inflammation of nerves behind the eye.The pattern of cluster headache attacks earn their name: episodic cluster headaches consist of active periods that may last days or even months, during which headaches occur in “clusters” every other day or as frequently as eight times per day. Headache-free remissions can last months or years.During active periods, factors that may trigger attacks include alcohol, high altitude, air travel, bright sunlight, exertion or foods, especially foods high in nitrites. Drugs that dilate the blood vessels, such as nitroglycerine and various blood pressure medications, can also set off an attack. When the cycle is inactive, these triggers usually have no effect.Cluster headache pain generally resides on one side, behind or around the eye or in the temples, and may be accompanied |
