A Woman’s Guide to Sleep: Guaranteed Solutions for a Good Night’s Rest $19 How many hours of sleep did you get last night? Five? Six? None? You’re not alone. Most women get far less sleep than they need — in any given month more than half report symptoms of insomnia. Women’s sleep problems are different from men’s because they have a different biology, psychology, and sleep patterns. A Woman’s Guide to Sleep is the first book to address your unique needs, and offer proven solutions that work.Your sleep is affected by many factors. Fluctuating hormones — whether it’s PMS, pregnancy, or menopause — can wreak havoc on your sleep. If you’ve just given birth, you stand to lose 700 hours of sleep your baby’s first year! The “architecture” of your sleep changes as you age, and you might find yourself suddenly waking hours off schedule. Health problems that affect women disproportionately, such as depression and pain syndromes, also erode healthy sleep. What you eat — or don’t eat, if you’re dieting — can sabotage your nights, as can that nightcap you have. And social pressures — juggling work, home, and parenting — can fill your nights with anxiety instead of restful sleep. These unique problems require unique solutions. Dr. Joyce A. Walsleben, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the NYU School of Medicine, and Rita Baron-Faust, a leading writer for women’s health issues, explain how sleep problems arise and how to combat them with the right sleep-promoting foods, supplements, exercise, stress reducers, and biorhythm adjustments, as well as with prescription, over-the-counter, and alternative treatments. You’ll learn to avoid the sleep robbers hidden in many common foods, medications, andsupplements. Drawn from Dr. Walsleben’s more than twenty years as a sleep researcher and clinician, many of these solutions are simple, surprising, and low-tech — and they really work. This book also tells you how to get a good night’s sleep when your partner is the one tossing |

Caution: Snake Oil $24.95 The headlines keep coming. Every day, we meet new health-related stories about prescription and over-the-counter drugs, medical devices and procedures, the lifestyle we should adopt, foods we should favor, and dietary supplements that would surely add years to our lives. Rightly, we dismiss much of this as pure snake oil. Mayonnaise prevents Alzheimer’s? Chelation therapy blasts away arterial plaque? Food coloring lowers bad cholesterol? Cinnamon clobbers diabetes? Grapefruit erases breast cancer? Watermelon slashes prostate cancer? Come on! But what about more serious-sounding claims? True enough, reports about ACE inhibitors and beta blockers, Advil and Motrin, 64-slice CT scans and PSA tests, drug-coated stents and the DASH diet appear to be far removed from snake oil, but false claims about any of these, this book asserts, are snake oil no less than absurd and fantastic claims about mayonnaise and Alzheimer’s. Consider how glowing press releases of one time, even by renowned medical journals or the FDA, are often followed by conflicting stories at a later time, which makes us ask: Will fancy cholesterol drugs save us from heart attacks or will they destroy our liver? Is the once-a-day baby aspirin the “cure of the century” or a stroke-causing hoax? Will Avandia fight our diabetes or give us a heart attack? “CAUTION: SNAKE OIL!” offers a remedy: If we care to separate bogus claims from the real thing, we must adopt the special way of statistical thinking that is routinely employed by the best of those who undertake the scientific studies that alone can generate medical knowledge we can trust. |

Devil’s Picnic: Around the World in Pursuit of Forbidden Fruit $14.95 A journey into illicit pleasure the world over. From Norwegian moonshine to the pentobarbital sodium sipped by suicide tourists in Switzerland—and,, in between, baby eels killed by an infusion of tobacco, a garlicky Spanish stew of bull’s testicles, tea laced with cocaine, and malodorous French cheese—Taras Grescoe has written a travelogue of forbidden indulgences. As Grescoe crisscrosses the globe in pursuit of his quarry, he delves into questions of regional culture and repressive legislation—from the clandestine absinthe distillation in an obscure Swiss valley to the banning of poppy seed biscuits in Singapore—and launches into a philosophical investigation of what’s truly bizarre: how something as fundamental as the plants and foods we consume could be so vilified and demonized. An investigation into what thrills us, what terrifies us, and what would make us travel ten thousand miles and evade the local authorities, The Devil’s Picnic is a delicious and compelling expedition into the heart of vice and desire. |

Fancy Guppy $2.79 These fascinating fish are livebearers who can rapidly reproduce in a community aquarium because they give birth to babies, rather than laying eggs. To aid in survival, provide hiding spaces for baby fish. Guppies are omnivores, which mean they eat both plan and animal matter, including small live foods and certain vegetables. You will see your guppy swimming in the middle and at the top of your aquarium. To create a beautiful aquarium environment, be sure to add some bottom swimmers as well. Ask a PetSmart associate to help you choose. Things to remember Adding fish Whether you’re just starting your aquarium or introducing new fish to your tank, don’t forget to add only 1-3 at a time. Nutrition Choose a vegetable-based flake or pellet food. Feed according to the directions on the packaging. Specialty foods Vary their diet by including frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex worms and other small worms, mosquito larvae and daphnia. Always remember to thaw frozen foods before feeding. Frequent feedings For optimum health, feed your livebearers as much food as they will consume in 1-3 minutes, twice a day. You can alternate between regular staple diet feedings and 2-4 meals per week of a specialty food. Aquarium Livebearers should be kept in a large aquarium, with surface area being more important than depth. Minimum aquarium size should be 10 gallons. A good rule of thumb is one gallon of water for every one inch of full-grown fish. Dcor Decorate their aquarium with lots of live, bunch plants. Be sure to place them on the sides and back of the aquarium so they’ll have enough space to swim in the center. Filtration Livebearers need well-oxygenated water, but do not like forceful water motion. Salt Mollies require a small amount of salt in their aquarium. Add two teaspoons of aquariu |

Food Manufacturers of France: Groupe Danone, Menier Chocolate, Debauve $9.8 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Groupe Danone, known as Dannon in the United States, is a French food-products multinational corporation based in Paris. It claims world leadership in fresh dairy products, marketed under the corporate name, and also in bottled water. In 2007 it swapped its world number 2 position as producer of cereals and biscuits for the same position in baby foods, having sold the biscuits division to Kraft Foods and acquired Numico. Besides the Danone/Dannon brand of yoghurts, the company owns several internationally known brands of bottled water: Volvic, Evian, and Badoit. About 56% of its 2006 net sales derived from dairy, 28% from beverages, and 16% from biscuits and cereals. Danone owns many water brands worldwide. In Asia, it has acquired Yili, Aqua (Indonesia) and Robust (92%) and has a 51% holding in China’s Wahaha Joint Venture Company, giving it a total market share of 20% and making it the leading vendor of packaged water in Asia. The original company bearing the corporate name was founded in 1919 by Isaac Carasso in Barcelona (Spain) as a small factory producing yoghurt. The factory was named Danone, a Catalan diminutive of the name of his first son, Daniel Carasso. Ten years later, the first French factory was built, but, during World War II, Daniel Carasso moved the company to New York, since, because Carasso was Jewish and France was occupied by the Germans and controlled by French collaborationists, his life was under threat, where Dannon (note the spelling) Milk Products Inc. was founded. In the United States, Daniel partnered with the Swiss-born Spaniard Joe Metzger and changed the brand name to Dannon to sound more American. In 1951, Daniel Carasso returned to Paris to manage the family’s businesses in France and Spain, and the American… More: |

For Jason…A Mother’s Story $9.99 Having a baby was the greatest gift that Julie could’ve been given. Going through a clinic, that didn’t perform an ultrasound on her, turned out to be disastrous. She didn’t know until her Jason was 4 months old that he was going to face many challenges with no understanding of what was happening to him. He had so many diagnoses that the doctors just said that he had Cerebral Palsy. Evidently, that was an encompassing title that included hydrocephalus, mental retardation, tongue thrust, spastic muscles, scoliosis, blindness, reflux and inability to chew solid foods. Then you add a young mother that thought she knew it all and learned very quickly that she knew nothing about being a mother. Julie didn’t sugar-coat any of what Jason or she went through. This story is heartbreaking, inspiring, educating, deeply honest and uplifting all at the same time. |

French Beans and Food Scares: Culture and Commerce in an Anxious Age $30 From mad cows to McDonaldization to genetically modified maize, European food scares and controversies at the turn of the millennium provoked anxieties about the perils hidden in an increasingly industrialized, internationalized food supply. These food fears have cast a shadow as long as Africa, where farmers struggle to meet European demand for the certifiably clean green bean. But the trade in fresh foods between Africa and Europe is hardly uniform. Britain and France still do business mostly with their former colonies, in ways that differ as dramatically as their national cuisines. The British buy their “baby veg” from industrial-scale farms, pre-packaged and pre-trimmed; the French, meanwhile, prefer their green beans naked, and produced by peasants. Managers and technologists coordinate the baby veg trade between Anglophone Africa and Britain, whereas an assortment of commercants and self-styled agro-entrepreneurs run the French bean trade. Globalization, then, has not erased cultural difference in the world of food and trade, but instead has stretched it to a transnational scale.French Beans and Food Scares explores the cultural economies of two “non-traditional” commodity trades between Africa and Europe–one anglophone, the other francophone–in order to show not only why they differ but also how both have felt the fall-out of the wealthy world’s food scares. In a voyage that begins in the mid-19th century and ends in the early 21st, passing by way of Paris, London, Burkina Faso and Zambia, French Beans and Food Scares illuminates the daily work of exporters, importers and other invisible intermediaries in the global fresh food economy. These intermediaries’ accounts provide a unique perspective on the practical and ethical challenges of globalized food trading in an anxious age. They also show how postcolonial ties shape not only different societies’ geographies of food supply, but also their very ideas about what makes |
